It would be great way to build my credit score. The reason I’m saying this is because the Toyota dealership where my dad bought his 4Runner has an FJC for just under $20,000.
And if I’m going to get a car that’s both uncomfortable and impractical, I might as well do it in style.
Seriously, I’m lusting right now. I’d ask you guys to talk me out of it, but from past experience, that never works out.

I’ve come around on these. I can dig it.

As a first time buyer, unless I could front like 10k, I’d never finance a 20k car

20k on a FJC is actually a pretty good price from what I’ve heard. Their resale is not dying.

Don’t forget to think about insurance. I’m assuming you’re kind of young and insuring an FJ you have a lien on doesn’t sound cheap.

I got a quote for me for shits and giggles. Being a 21 year old male, one ticket, no accidents, and having already payed off a loan on a new vehicle mine was $170 a month.
Assuming a ‘08 4x4 with side airbags to be specific

I will never understand insurance rates. My 2011 M3 was less than $100 more per 6 months to insure than my 1997 Explorer; I was also 24 at the time.

Wait, I thought you were supposed to try and finance an expensive car as a first time buyer.

Thats what people at my job do

I mean, the M3 was the first car I bought. I tired to buy one with only 5k down, didn’t get approved. Waited about 9 months, then got mine with a lot more down.

Haha! Go drive the two then tell me which one you would have more fun in. The 6-speed in the wrangler is a far superior manual to drive than the FJ assuming you would make that correct decision. I spent 12+ months researching, driving and analyzing both and i went into it wanting the FJ to be the victor but there is a reason it is no longer built but the wrangler sales are going up. Plus take the top off and fun rachets up 1000%. My 2 cents.

I don’t want a manual.

Shiny 4 door wranglers are an affront to American morality.

The green is the best color on these. From what I understand they are basically a 2 door 4Runner which is basically a Tacoma. And I love my Tacoma.
...
Buy a Tacoma.

It’s called leg day bro.
May as well get a Camry.

Brooo, if I don’t want a manual transmission, I don’t want a fucking manual transmission. I don’t want to have do the river dance every time traffic advances. That shit will get old pretty fucking quickly.

It is getting old. My next vehicle will not have a stick.

The explorer is probably much more likely to get stolen.

I had a 2007 FJ for 3 years. Great truck, very reliable. I got used to the blind spots and never had a problem with them. It was such a beast in the snow (with the right tires).
Test drive it, you might like it. I probably should have kept mine. Bought it new in 07 for 24k.

If you don’t mind me asking where do you live? I lived in Dallas/Fort Worth for a couple years with an S2000 (manual only) and it was pretty miserable in traffic but once you get some open space it was every bit worth it!

I almost ended up with a ‘14 trail team with the manual but instead bought a V10 TDI Touareg for all the Torques. Am now in ‘16 wrangler unlimited (4-door). I use it half the time for oilfield work and the 4-door vs suicide door for access to the rear seats for equipment and hauling around members of my team gave the wrangler quite the advantage.

I live in Seattle too, and should take the bus more often than I do, since it costs about $30 a day to park if I’m not there in time for the “early bird” parking price.

...or roll over. Also going to be the vehicle of choice of about 100 times more methheads than an E90 M3. And first cars for a lot of idiot teenagers. Overall, the ‘90s Explorer is more likely to have some pretty ugly actuarial statistics as a model.

Can confirm, manual in traffic is the absolute worst. There’s also those days (for me at least) where you just want to get in the car and let it do all the work.
![]() 10/17/2016 at 21:13 |

It is because it is a lot harder for idiots to get an M3. If the idiots can’t get them they can’t crash them.

I seriously looked at those several years ago. They are cool and perfect sized for me, (basically I fit but it’s smaller than a Tahoe.) It came down to mileage for me - I couldn’t justify it with a 20mi commute... They drive nice. The only thing I was quibbling about, (other than the mileage,) was that the interior seems a touch cheap/plasticky to me.
